Minimum Mario Any% is a Minimum Mario challenge run where the goal is to beat the game while minimizing the amount of Mario moons in the run.

Minimum Mario Any% in 18 Mario moons has only ever been completed by Dosle.[1] This is mainly due to Moe-Eye Escape, a trick to get many otherwise inaccessible capture moons with a Moe-Eye, being incredibly hard to perform. Since the trick takes around 5-8 hours even if performed perfectly, there is little interest in humanly performing the entire run.

Required moons

Cascade Kingdom

Our First Power Moon can be most easily collected by first doing First Moon Skip, going to and capturing the Dino, and then going back and collecting the Moon as the T-rex.[2]

Multi Moon Atop the Falls is then collected with a Chain Chomp, by performing Chain Chomp displacement on 1.0.0, or Death Chain Chomp displacement on any later version.

Sand Kingdom

The first Mario moon in the run is Atop the Highest Tower, which is collected to spawn the Moe-Eyes and the moving inverted pyramid platforms.

The Bullet Bills must be used to collect On the Leaning Pillar, On Top of the Stone Archway, Bullet Bill Breakthrough, Overlooking the Desert Town, and From a Crate in the Ruins. The first three moons are trivial, but the latter two require slopes to raise or lower the Bullet Bill, and the fast Bullet Bill acceleration glitch. Overlooking the Desert Town uses a ground pound spot in the ruins[3] and From a Crate in the Ruins uses one of the pyramid platforms[4] that only spawn after Atop the Highest Tower is obtained.

Moe-Eye Escape must be used to collect Hidden Room in the Flowing Sands, Where the Birds Gather, Lost in the Luggage, Herding Sheep in the Dunes, and Among the Five Cactuses. Hidden Room in the Flowing Sands can be collected by clipping a Moe-Eye out-of-bounds with either Platform clip or by getting it pushed using the 2D pipe.[5] When obtaining Herding Sheep in the Dunes, the Jaxi can be used to get the Moe-Eye out of the Sheep pen[6] otherwise Moe-Eye Escape would have to be done again. Since there is no known way to get a Moe-Eye out of the Oasis, Where the Birds Gather should be obtained last that way Moe-Eye escape is only required once in Any%.

The moons Inside a Block Is a Hard Place, Alcove in the Ruins, and Top of a Dune can be collected with either a Moe-Eye or Bullet Bill, and Bird Traveling the Desert can be collected with one of those captures or also the Spark pylon.

Wandering Cactus can be either collected with a Moe-Eye or on versions 1.2.0 and later, the Cactus can collect the moon.

This adds up to 15 possible capture moons in the first visit, plus one Mario moon, for a total of 16. Since Sand requires 16 moons to leave, all of these must be collected.

Metro Kingdom

In Metro Kingdom, before entering the Mechawiggler fight, it is currently proven possible to collect Inside an Iron Girder and Girder Sandwich, both as a Goomba. These two moons must be collected in Night Metro since they are not obtainable as a capture during scenario 2. Girder Sandwich uses Stingby storage to bounce on Stingbys as a Goomba, to navigate to the moon.[7]

After obtaining New Donk City's Pest Problem, which is only possible as Mario, it is then possible to collect both moons in Under Siege, both moons in Bullet Billding, Remotely Captured Car, and Found with Metro Kingdom Art, which adds up to six more capture moons. One Man's Trash... is obtainable by collecting it while the moon is spawning.[8]

Since nine more moons are required to get the total 20, required to leave Metro, it is optimal to collect the remaining eight story moons, which are only possible as Mario. This then puts the Kingdom in peace, so Caught Hopping on a Building!, which is unlocked in peace, can be collected with a Spark pylon. This is done by spawning the moon close enough to the pylon so that it can home into the moon.[9]

Peace also unlocks more capture moons for Minimum Mario Max Moons as the Letter captures appear during postgame.

Theories

It is theorized that in Bowser's Kingdom, the Multi Moon can be collected as a Goomba using Goomba nut jumping, a theoretical trick in which the player can indefinitely bounce a Goomba stack off of a nut midair to get the Goomba stack to the arena, using nut jumping to get the nut under the Goomba stack each time. However, due to the use of nut jumping, this would require version 1.1.0 or earlier.
