Roll cancel clip

From SMO.wiki

A roll cancel clip (often abbreviated as RCC) is a type of out-of-bounds clip that involves roll cancelling into specific walls while Mario is moving at a high speed. Most instances of roll cancel clips require hitting the wall in a very precise location in order to clip through. The roll cancel clip is one of the most prominent forms of clipping in the game, with many dozens of known locations to execute the trick.

Roll cancel clips are often easiest using an instant roll cancel, meaning that the roll cancel is executed immediately after initiating a roll from a ground pound. This requires entering inputs in a very rapid succession. When using this method, some roll cancel clips may have slightly different timings for the inputs than others.

Some of the most notable instances of roll cancel clips include Inverted Pyramid Clip, Upstairs and Downstairs Snow Clip, and numerous clips through doors to buildings in the Metro Kingdom.

All roll cancel clips (but not surface clips, since they are a different type of clip) are more precise on version 1.2.0 onward, with a few no longer seeming to be possible at all. Many suspect that the developers attempted to patch the glitch but were unable to completely prevent it from being performed in most locations.

Some have theorized that cap throw clips are a more difficult form of roll cancel clips, but it is unknown whether this is true.

Execution

To execute a roll cancel clip using an instant roll cancel:

  • Position Mario directly against the wall, or potentially slightly away from it, in the correct spot (this varies between clips).
  • Jump or backflip (again depending on the specific clip setup), and perform a ground pound in midair.
  • After the ground pound lands, initiate a boosted roll by pressing X or Y.
  • Immediately cancel the roll by pressing Y+B or X+A (utilizing the extra button that is not already being pressed from the previous step).
