A cap throw is one of the most basic mechanics in Super Mario Odyssey. A cap throw is performed by pressing X/Y or shaking the controller. Cap throws are used for various actions, including capturing enemies, pulling levers, activating scarecrows and opening doors, as well as movement techniques like cap dives, vaults, roll cancel bounces and cap throw clips.

By shaking the controller in a specific direction, it is possible to perform motion controlled cap throws, such as upthrows, downthrows and spinthrows.
