Talkatoo glitch

The Talkatoo glitch is a glitch that occurs when Cappy collides with Talkatoo just after a conversation with him ends. This glitch can cause many different strange effects, such as locking the camera or causing Mario to float.

The Talkatoo glitch is only possible on versions 1.1.0 and earlier.

Explanation

If the setup was performed correctly, just after the conversation with Talkatoo ends, Cappy will collide with him. After Talkatoo's hit stun animation finishes, two things will occur provided that Talkatoo is still on screen: Mario will attempt to enter his conversation animation, and the camera will assume the angle that it normally does during a conversation with Talkatoo. However, Mario will not actually enter conversation.

If Talkatoo is off-screen at the moment that the camera would normally lock, the camera lock will be stored until Talkatoo is visible again. It is also possible to cancel the camera lock by talking to an NPC before activating the stored camera lock. (In this case, the camera will slowly move in the direction of Talkatoo, but can still be moved.)

Once the camera is locked, Mario can roam freely with the camera focused on Talkatoo. Mario can also exhibit strange behavior if the player performs certain actions at the moment that Mario attempts to enter his conversation animation. Examples of this include the following:

  • If Mario attempts to throw Cappy at this moment, he will enter a state in which he falls slower than normal.
  • If Mario ground pounds at this moment, he will stall in midair indefinitely in the standing animation. (This can be used to gain an unlimited high score in the jump rope minigame.)
  • If Mario pulls himself up onto a ledge, Mario will be unable to move at all, resulting in a softlock.[1]

In the Sand Kingdom, if one enters the Jaxi mount animation from the side and activates the Talkatoo glitch before Mario has fully mounted, then Mario will be stuck on top of Jaxi in the standing animation. One can also push Jaxi with Glydon and have Mario be on top of him while he slides.[2] Sometimes, Mario will be on top of Jaxi with the walking animation instead.[3] If Mario enters the Jaxi mount animation from jumping on it (rather than pressing X/Y next to him), then the player activates the Talkatoo glitch, Mario will gravitate towards Jaxi and actually mount when he gets there.[4]
