In some circumstances, Mario will be placed into a bubble and carried back to a location known as his safe spot, which is generally the last safe location that Mario stood on solid ground. Bubbles are most commonly encountered in Assist Mode, where they will generally activate when Mario touches a death area, lava, or poison, but bubbles are also used in specific circumstances regardless of whether Assist Mode is enabled. The player cannot move while in a bubble, and being placed in a bubble will also teleport Cappy back onto Mario's head.
