2D Skip is simply a small shortcut in the very last 2D section of the game. Misnamed by the community (or not, depending on where you stand) this trick requires you to execute a wrap around jump to avoid part of the 2D section. 2D skip saves about 2 seconds

The trick is performed by strategically not destroying certain blocks with Bowser's fire breath to skip a small section of platforming. This trick saves about two seconds when executed properly.

This shortcut deserved to be named because of how many runs it killed when the game was just released.
2D Skip was one of the first speedrun strategies discovered in Super Mario Odyssey. While the trick is incredibly easy by modern standards, it caused a significant number of lost runs when it was first discovered. This is due to a combination of general inexperience with Super Mario Odyssey as a whole, in junction with it taking place at the very end of the run. It is still not uncommon for this simple trick to be failed simply due to nerves.

This trick has gained notoriety for being much more difficult than it actually is. This is partially due to inexperience with the trick itself, but also because of clips of runners failing the trick gaining lots of attention on sites like Reddit.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/WatchPeopleDieInside/comments/akcjhz/failing_at_the_end_of_a_speedrun/</ref>

*Jump across the gap onto the block to the right. Do not break the floating block.
*Jump back across the gap and land on the higher brick
*Jump back across the gap and land on the floating block.
*Go to the edge of the brick
*Position yourself on the edge of the floating block.
*Jump up and hold left to land on the platform above
*Jump up, hold slightly forwards until no longer beneath the overhang, then immediately drift backwards.
