The Inverted Pyramid Clip is one of the most notable clips in Super Mario Odyssey. It allows you to clip inside the Inverted Pyramid before getting the Atop the Highest Tower and Moon Shards in the Sand moons. The trick is significantly easier on earlier patches (1.1 and before), however due to 1.3 being faster for all main categories, many runners have to learn the harder version of IP Clip.

Inverted Pyramid Clip, often abbreviated as IP Clip, is a clip that allows Mario to enter the Inverted Pyramid early by clipping through the door, which does not normally open until Moon Shards in the Sand is collected.

The clip is possible as both a roll cancel clip and a cap throw clip. Clip attempts on the right side of the door seem to behave as a roll cancel clip, while those on the left side seem to behave as a cap throw clip (but can still be done using an instant roll cancel).

Since cap throw clips are not possible on versions 1.2.0 and onward, the clip must be performed as a roll cancel clip on the right side of the door on these newer versions. Additionally, due to the increased difficulty of roll cancel clips on these newer versions, the clip is more precise than on versions 1.1.0 and earlier. Due to version 1.3.0 being fastest for all main categories, including those that utilize Inverted Pyramid Clip, many runners are forced to learn the harder version.

Speedrun usage

This clip is used in all categories that necessitate defeating Hariet at the top of the Inverted Pyramid (with the exception of All Story Moons), as it saves upward of a few minutes depending on the category and the objectives that need to be completed.

In these speedrun categories, Inverted Pyramid Skip is usually a faster alternative, as it allows the pyramid's interior to be skipped entirely as well.
